Driving an Italian luxury car in France and Switzerland: what to know

One car, three countries

The natural perimeter of Grandavia covers Italy, France and Switzerland. Many real stays cross more than one country: Milan and St. Moritz, Forte dei Marmi and the French Riviera, Lake Como and Geneva. Having a single car for the whole trip, without changing supplier or vehicle, is a concrete simplification.

To make this possible, our organisation handles every bureaucratic and operational aspect in advance: vignettes, cross-border authorisations, compliant tyres, vehicle documentation. The guest finds everything ready.

Motorway vignettes: Switzerland and Slovenia

Switzerland requires an annual vignette to use the motorway network. Even a brief crossing (e.g. Chiasso-Lugano or the Geneva exit) requires the vignette. Our vehicles are equipped by default, with no action required from the guest.

France does not require a vignette but applies traditional tolls. Slovenia has an electronic vignette system similar to Switzerland's. For each agreed destination, the vehicle is prepared with everything needed.

Winter tyres: French rules

From 1 November to 31 March, France mandates winter tyres (or chains on board) in many mountain municipalities, identified by specific signs. Sanctions are significant.

All our vehicles for winter stays in France or Switzerland are delivered with certified winter tyres, fully compliant with local regulations. Not something the guest needs to think about.

Documents for border crossing

Driving a rental car outside Italy requires a formal authorisation from the vehicle owner, in addition to standard vehicle documents (logbook, insurance). We provide a paper dossier on board with all necessary documents in Italian, English and French.

Systematic checks at internal Schengen borders are rare, but in case of verification the dossier ensures every crossing is handled without friction.

Pickup in one country, return in another

An increasingly frequent request is to pick up the car in Italy (e.g. Milan Malpensa) and return it in another country (e.g. Geneva or Nice). It is feasible: we provide a logistics fee agreed at proposal stage, based on the route.

The advisor proposes the most efficient combination based on the travel programme, avoiding unnecessary transfers and optimising time.
