Megève and Courchevel: arriving with style in the French Alps

Why choose self-drive for the French Alps

Megève, Courchevel and Val d'Isère share a precise aesthetic: luxury chalets, starred restaurants, perfectly groomed pistes. Most guests arrive from Geneva, between an hour and a half and three hours from the final destination. Self-drive is the freest choice for those who want to alternate ski days, mountain lunches and dinners in different valleys.

Having your own SUV in season also means avoiding collective shuttles, managing ski equipment calmly and moving between nearby villages (Combloux, Saint-Gervais, Méribel) without depending on third parties.

From Geneva to the valleys: the three main routes

Megève is the closest, about an hour and ten of driving from Geneva airport via A40 and D1212. The route is scenic, especially the final climb to the village. Hotels like Les Fermes de Marie, Four Seasons Megève and Le Chalet Zannier are the area's references.

Courchevel takes around two hours via A41 and A430. The final climb to Courchevel 1850 is the most technical part and deserves an AWD vehicle with professional winter tyres. Hotels like Les Airelles, Cheval Blanc and L'Apogée define the standard.

Val d'Isère is the furthest, about three hours of driving. The final descent along the Tarentaise and the climb to the village are spectacular. References: Airelles Val d'Isère, Le K2 Chogori, Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges.

Which car for the French white season

Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes GLE and GLS are the most requested. Cargo capacity for ski equipment and winter luggage is essential, as is comfort on long motorway stretches.

For groups of friends or extended families, the Mercedes V-Class self-drive offers interior space hard to match and remains the logical choice for parties of more than four with full equipment.

Logistics: vignettes, customs and parking

The Switzerland-to-France crossing requires attention to the Swiss motorway vignette (needed even for a few kilometres of Swiss network at the Geneva exit) and to winter tyre rules, mandatory in France in mountain municipalities in winter.

All our vehicles destined for these routes are delivered compliant with current rules. The advisor handles in advance any documentation for crossing borders with an Italian-plated car.
