Dolomites self-drive: from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Madonna di Campiglio

Why the Dolomites deserve a dedicated road trip

The Dolomites are a UNESCO heritage site, but above all one of the few European territories where driving quality is part of the experience. Pordoi, Sella, Falzarego and Giau passes alternate technical hairpins with vistas that change kilometre by kilometre. Tackling them with a premium SUV means enjoying every corner without giving up comfort between stops.

A three or four-day itinerary lets you touch the three main poles: Cortina d'Ampezzo, Alta Badia and Val Gardena, Madonna di Campiglio. Each with its own personality and each linked to the other by stretches that justify the trip.

Day 1 and 2: Cortina and the eastern passes

Cortina is the ideal base for the first two days. Hotels like Cristallo, Rosapetra and Faloria offer top-level comfort and easy access to scenic trails. A day dedicated to the eastern passes (Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Misurina, Cibiana) delivers some of the world's most photographed vistas.

The second day can be devoted to Falzarego and Giau: technical climbs, stops at Rifugio Lagazuoi and descent toward Alta Badia. A lunch in San Cassiano, perhaps at St. Hubertus, closes the first segment.

Day 3: Alta Badia, Sella Ronda and Val Gardena

The Sellaronda taken by car instead of skis offers a rare perspective. The full loop of the four passes (Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Campolongo) takes half a day with photo stops, and is best done in the morning before tourist traffic.

Val Gardena is the next stop. Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva offer a different aesthetic, closer to Tyrolean culture. Hotels like Adler Lodge Ortisei or Alpenroyal are excellent bases for the intermediate night.

Day 4: Madonna di Campiglio via Bolzano

The final segment crosses Bolzano and climbs into Val Rendena. Madonna di Campiglio is the western reference of the area, base for the Adamello and Brenta. Hotels like DV Chalet or Rosatti deliver service in line with the rest of the trip.

The return can be coordinated to Milan, Verona or Venice based on the next flight. The vehicle is delivered directly at your hotel or preferred airport.

Which car for the Dolomites

Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes GLE and Audi Q8 are the references. AWD is essential year-round, even in summer, for the gravel sections to high-altitude refuges. Boot space must accommodate backpacks, photographic gear and technical clothing.
